Choose your rugs
The architecture of your house, of course, must always be considered in choosing your floorcoverings as well as the rest of your furnishings. Not that French designs are the only thing to use in a French house, or hooked rugs in a New England cottage. Apply the basic principles of color, line, scale and texture and you won't go wrong.
A large formal house demands luxurious "dressed-up" textures and elaborate formal patterns that would be as out of place in the cottage as an evening dress at breakfast.
The informal house calls for simple patterns and unpretentious textures.
