How to choose rugs

For permanent homes wall-to-wall carpet is practical and has many things to recommend it. It absorbs a surprising amount of both inside and outside noise, there is an effect of greater spaciousness and furniture arrangements are much more flexible. The floor underneath need not be expensive polished hardwood, and the hazards of slipping and falling are largely eliminated.

From my experience, rooms with wall-to-wall carpet are easier to take care of, too, for one piece of equipment—the vacuum cleaner—and one operation, do the job, instead of hav­ing to both clean the rugs and mop and polish the borders.

The fact that they cannot easily be turned about so traffic and wear isn't always in the same place is a disadvantage, but furniture can be rearranged from time to time to partially overcome this problem.
